Abstract
Non-gestational choriocarcinoma of the ovary is a rare malignancy of germ cell origin. The majority of these are mixed germ cell tumors and only 30 cases of nongestational pure ovarian choriocarcinoma have been reported. The disease mainly affects children and young women. lt is difficult to distinguish between the gestational or nongestational origin of a pure ovarian choriocarcinoma in a postmenarcheal girl. The clinícal presentation is like that of ovarian malignancy but the diagnosis can be confused with ectopic pregnancy if the patient is in reproductive age group. The management involves staging laparotomy followed by chemotherapy with the BEP (bleomycin, etoposide, cisplatin) regime. In young girls with stage 1 disease only the affected ovary is removed, thus preserving future reproductive potential. The response to treatment is assessed by serial measurement of the ß human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) titers. The data on long-term efficacy of the treatment is however limited due to rarity of the disease.
