SCEDOSPORIUM APIOSPERMUM AND SCEDOSPORIUM PROLIFICANS DUE TO OCCASIONAL DIAGNOSTIC CONFUSIONS AND DIFFICULT TO THREAT INFECTIONS
Abstract
The hyphomycetes genus Scedoporium includes two medically important species whose names have undergone several changes. Scedosporium apiosermum and Scedosporium prolificans may cause invazive infections in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts and in tissue, they are indistiguishable from other filamentous fungi. In vitro, the morphological confusion can be attributed to high polimorphism and abundance of (syn)ana- and teleomorphs. Infections caused by Scedosporium spp are difficult to treat because of its intrinsec resistance or reduced susceptibility to common antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B. This paper is focused on the significant characteristics, infections and antifungal susceptibility of Scedosporium apiosermum and Scedosporium prolificans due to serious difficulties in both accurate clinical and laboratory diagnosis, as well as in monitoring medication.
