Abstract
Background: Passive smoking has been linked to exacerbation of bronchial asthma in children. Method: Retrospective study of cases and controls in asthmatic children aged 2 to 14 years attending the allergy consultation of the Pediatric Allergy Service of Camagüey. We selected 200 asthmatics, half of the unstable evolution and the rest of the stable evolution. A survey was conducted among patients in both groups and measured the variables "drug use" and "quality of life". Those exposed to tobacco smoke and those not exposed were assessed. In the homes of exposed subjects, the number of smokers and the number of cigarettes consumed during the day were also determined. Results: Steroid use was higher in exposed children (95% CI: 4.80 to 19.22). The quality of life was also in those exposed (RV = 18.86, 95% CI: 8.96 to 39.70). In the households where the mother, father and other relatives were at risk (RV = 4.50, 95% CI: 2.46 to 8.23), as well as 40 cigarettes (RV = 5.02, 95% CI, : 2.72 to 9.28). Conclusions: The risk of pediatric asthma increases with the increase in the number of cigarettes consumed in the home and the number of smokers living together.
