Abstract
Introduction: Capsule endoscopy, computerized tomography enteroclysis, follow-through study and double-balloon enteroscopy are actually the most used studies for the complete exploration of the small intestine. Aim: To describe the use of follow-through test and double-balloon enteroscopy combined as diagnostic methods in small intestine affections. Material and methods: A descriptive retrospective study was carried out with 83 small bowel follow-through tests and 97 double-balloon enteroscopies in 83 clinical registries of patients during a period of 42 months, an age range of 19-82 years (mean 45.9 ± 17.1), and a slight female predominance. Results: Anemia and chronic diarrhea were the main indications for both studies. The main pathologic radiological signs were: alteration of the mucosal pattern, bowel rigidity, accelerated transit and flocculation-segmentation of the barium column. Lymphoid hyperplasia and nonspecific jejunitis were the most frequent of the enteroscopic pathological results. Histology showed a diagnostic coincidence of 82.6% between the pathologies suspected by radiological signs and endoscopic results. Conclusions: The follow-through test and double-balloon enteroscopy are useful combined for the management of intestinal affections.
