PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY, NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY AND COMMUNITY OPHTHALMOLOGY: AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE

Optic neuritis in Indian patients has a different clinical profile as compared to the caucasian population and has worse outcomes. Optical coherence tomography has an important role in the investigative profile of optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis and proves the presence of a sub clinical nerve fibre loss even in eyes without an attack of optic neuritis. Anisometropic amblyopia shows significant risk of recurrence with the risk being higher in patients of older age and a better visual acuity at stopping treatment. There is thus a need for proper follow up after stopping amblyopia therapy. Both glaucoma and myopia are important public health problems from the community ophthalmology point of view and causes for avoidable blindness in India. They should be managed with appropriate screening and early treatment.
