BRAIN DEATH - CONSENSUS AND CONTROVERSIES

Brain death is an irreversible cessation of all functions of the brain and requires apneic coma with absence of elicitable brainstem reflexes for its certification. The concept was evolved following inventions of ventillators and pressor drugs wherein the cardiopulmonary function could be sustained even in the absence of brain function. Despite the wide acceptance, the concept is still unclear to many and differences continue on its justification and practice guidelines.
