These standards have evolved since their initiation and this evolution is based in evidence and practice and has guided research efforts in this dynamic and growing field. This article provides information about the 2007 U.S. Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education, updates experiences related to the implementation of these Standards and includes recent evidence from the diabetes literature about self-management education and support.
