Abstract
Health science professionals and students have an important role in the health care of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) at hospital level, since their attitude can be a barrier to medical care for these people. Due to this, a descriptive study was conducted in order to determine the attitude of medical and nursing students towards PLWHA. The study population consisted of 1 787 students; the sample was selected using the stratified method with proportional affixation. It included 226 students from the medical program and 90 from the nursing program. The results show a mean age of 20.98 ± 2.75 years, and 72.2% of the participants were females. Nineteen point three percent (19.3%) had a "favorable" attitude towards PLWHA. There was no statistical difference between the attitude and the gender and age variables (p > 0.05). Eighty-eight point two percent (88.2%) of medical students had an "unfavorable" attitude, and a significant statistical difference was observed between age and attitude among medical students (p = 0.009); while among nursing students the attitude was "favorable" in 25.6%; there was no statistical difference between age and attitude. It is evident that the participants in the study require orientation, education, and information about ethical aspects regarding HIV and towards PLWHA from the beginning of their studies, since there is a great likelihood that during their studies and after graduation, they must deal with this kind of patients.
