Introducción:
La periodontitis es una enfermedad multifactorial que involucra el papel de un microorganismo invasor y los tejidos del hospedero. Hay dos mecanismos para la destrucción tisular. Las bacterias liberan exotoxinas que actúan directamente y destruyen los tejidos y, también, por un mecanismo indirecto en el cual se reclutan las células inmunes del hospedero en respuesta a la invasión bacteriana para luchar contra los organismos invasores; pero al hacerlo se produce la destrucción del tejido del hospedero.
