La preeclampsia es la hipertensión de novo con proteinuria después de las 20 semanas de gestación. Las pacientes con preeclampsia grave tienen uno o más hallazgos como cefalea grave, dolor en hipocondrio derecho o epigastrio, concentración sérica de transaminasas de al menos el doble de lo normal, presión sistólica > 160 mm Hg o diastólica > 110 mm Hg en dos ocasiones separadas por lo menos por seis horas, menos de 100 000 plaquetas por mm3, proteinuria > 5 g/24 horas, oliguria o restricción grave del crecimiento fetal. Es el trastorno hipertensivo del embarazo con mayor potencial para producir la muerte.
