ResumenFundamento: La depresión y los síntomas negativos son dos síndromes que se encuentran frecuentemente en la esquizofrenia. Si bien son considerados dos entidades distintas, comparten muchos síntomas y el impacto de la depresión sobre la medición de los síntomas esquizofrénicos negativos sigue siendo una pregunta sin respuesta. Métodos: Se compararon 20 pacientes con esquizofrenia negativa (que incluían 10 sujetos con síntomas depresivos) con 20 sujetos esquizofrénicos sin esquizofrenia negativa (que incluían 10 sujetos con síntomas depresivos). Se midieron los síntomas negativos con una nueva escala para graduarlos, la escala Motora-Afectiva-Social. Esta escala utiliza medidas objetivas y diferencia los síntomas negativos expresivos de los funcionales sociales. Resultados: En los sujetos sin esquizofrenia negativa, los síntomas depresivos se asociaron con mayor nivel de síntomas negativos sociales pero no expresivos. En los sujetos con esquizofrenia negativa, la depresión no se asoció con diferencias en los síntomas negativos expresivos y sociales. Conclusión: Si bien la depresión y la esquizofrenia negativa comparten muchos síntomas, la primera tiene un impacto limitado sobre la medición de los síntomas negativos en la esquizofrenia. La depresión se asocia con un aumento de los síntomas negativos sociales en pacientes con bajo nivel de síntomas negativos basales. La depresión no aumenta el grado de síntomas negativos en la esquizofrenia negativa. Estos hallazgos deben ser confirmados con estudios longitudinales.
